Coronado: A Slice of Heaven along California’s Coast

By Judy Koutsky

For families who want to enjoy a wonderful and relaxing beach experience, head to the seaside community of Coronado, a five square mile peninsula that forms the western boundary of the San Diego Bay. There are 28 miles of beach that includes both the ocean and the bay, perfect for swimming, surfing, snorkeling playing in the sand and building sand castles. Bikers and walkers will love the dedicated 15 mile bike path which offers beautiful views of the seashore and sailboats.

There are ample opportunities for water activities including sailing and kayaking. Fishing opportunities are abundant as well as chartering a boat for the day.  Tennis, an 18-hole championship golf course, and other recreational activities abound. Attractions on the island include the Ferry Landing Marketplace, the Silver Strand Beach, Coronado Museum of History and Art and tours of the naval station at North Island. The climate here is the envy of the nation with an average daytime temperature of 70 degrees and sunny skies. The Travel Channel named Coronado one of the best beaches for families and for good reason. Coronado is serviced by the Coronado Ferry Company, the Coronado shuttle and the Old Town trolley.
