New Paltz, New York is a great family destination. There are apple orchards, wonderful vineyards, eclectic restaurants and unique boutique shops. For many, though, the great outdoors serve as the star attraction.
The town of New Paltz is located in the Wallkill River Valley. To the west is the well-known Shawangunk Mountains whose cliffs draw mountain climbers from all over the world. Hiking, repelling, and other outdoor activities abound here. The Minnewaska State Park Preserve, about ten minutes from New Paltz, has a mountain lake for swimming and boating, and the hiking trails and picnic areas make it the perfect place for a day of fun. Each season brings its own wonderful attributes. In the spring, thousands of apple orchards blossom, perfect for apple-picking. In the summer, outdoor activities are numerous and diverse. Fall foliage transfers this region into bursts of colors and winter allows for cross country skiing and other snow-bound activities.
